Course: The Mystics - Pathfinders to the Spiritual II
Sr. Patty Andrew osu
Starts Tuesday 21 July
Four sessions will be presented by Sr. Patty Andrew osu, featuring several men and women from the Christian mystical tradition who have illuminated the mystical path for those seeking a heart understanding of the divine. The series is a continuation of the work presented in 2019, however it is not necessary to have attended these sessions before taking part in the 2020 series.
The first session on Tuesday 21th July will offer a brief introduction to mysticism. It will then explore the mystical way of Clare of Assisi and her desire to gaze into the heart of the crucified Christ. For Clare this gazing into the untarnished mirror of God became a transforming experience in which love mirrored love.
The second session on Tuesday 28th July will explore Meister Eckhart’s insight that creativity and birthing are the essence of God. A central theme in his writing is the call to each person to become more aware of God dwelling deeply within so as to announce it, pronounce it and give birth to God. At this level of inner depth there is an experience of the spaciousness of love which is limitless and inclusive.
The third session on Tuesday 4th August will focus on Mechtild of Magdeburg and Gertrude the Great. These two women from the Benedictine Abbey in Helfta, Northern Germany, experienced the whole world overflowing with the Divine as source of all life. Living in the monastery at Helfta at the same time, they supported each other in their experiences of God’s revelation, yet each one’s relationship with the Divine was shaped by their uniqueness. Gertrude has been described as a characteristic feminine visionary wherein her beautiful and significant dreams resulted in loving conversations with Christ. Mechtild’s writings portray in a profound and joyful way, the deep sense of communion between the mystic and the Beloved. She embraces God as the source of all energy for living and to fully open ourselves to this energy means to dance with the Divine Life.
The fourth session on Tuesday 11th August will focus on Thomas Merton recognised as a significant, prophetic voice of 20th Century. He is acknowledged as one who offered a meaningful, mystical path for current times. The entry point for this exploration will be Merton’s claim “that the only mind worth having is that of the child.” This leads to embracing the reality reflected in the joy, openness and wonder of childhood, that God loves us just for being alive. With this understanding Merton transcended boundaries created by religions. His mystical pathway has the potential to heal the divisions which create so much violence and social unrest in today’s world.
Nobody will be turned away simply because they cannot afford to pay. Offer a donation if you cannot pay the full registration fee.
